In year 2 we wanted to do something special with Orange RockCorps. The site was taken care of. The social media boxes were ticked. So what could we do that would spread the message outside of the awesome volunteers and the people that know about RockCorps already?
We decided to make a socially-enabled machine that demonstrated the core values of RockCorps. Put something little in, and get something massive back. And it would make sense for it to rock.
The Sound of Orange RockCorps was born.
To start, we collected sounds from all the volunteers at their projects. Then we pieced all the sounds together to make up an amazing track that got played out at the gigs. Then we gave all the volunteers the chance to add their mates to the tracks. And we opened up the amazing machine to the public...
The site is a work of huge technical complexity. It uses Facebook Connect to hook you up with all your friends, then allows you to record your sounds via PC or over the phone. It then takes all of those fragments and joins them together to make a track that can be shared all over the web.

On September 26th 2008, the Royal Albert Hall will be taken over by 5000 people. No one will have paid to get in. But everyone will have earned the right to be there and a story to tell about the impact they've made in their local area.
The Orange RockCorps idea is simple: give four hours of your time to a voluntary project in your community, take back ownership of a local space and meet some new friends while you're at it. In return you get a ticket to a legendary gig that celebrates the power of people getting together and taking a positive step for their neighbourhood.
The online realisation of Orange RockCorps was simple too. We provided a platform for RockCorps to speak with an audience who spends more time on social media than they do watching TV. A central hub website tops it off, providing a gateway to the Orange RockCorps concept, aggregating discussion from the multi-faceted social network presence and delivers the nuts and bolts functionality to manage the volunteer programme.
Projects are running now, so get over to www.orangerockcorps.co.uk (or your favourite place online). Chances are, you'll find us there.
